Dear AV Community,

As a “charter member” the Anderson Valley Elder Home (AVEH) board of directors, I want to offer heartfelt thanks to our most recently retired board members, Maureen Bowman, Steve Krieg, Dave Papke and Aaron Weintraub, as well as to Anne Bennett, the hardest working unofficial ally ever to be a member of our team. It has been nearly a year since they completed their official service, but these folks still merit our public appreciation for many reasons.

In the Fall of 2014, the AV Elder Home had reached a crucial crossroads. Anderson Valley residents were looking back on more than 15 years of shared efforts to create a residence that will enable our elders to remain in the Valley, where even the hardiest of our settlers may one day find that they cannot maintain themselves on a remote and demanding property.

What, people were asking at that time, was AVEH doing to serve them? To many of our friends and neighbors, our progress was largely invisible. After all, newly installed water, electrical and septic systems do not make very good tour subjects. More obviously, two of our dwellings had been temporarily rented to families under 65 years of age, awaiting the right match with seniors. And our once optimistic promises of imminent construction had fallen victim to economic downswings that affected us all.

Furthermore, the Elder Home was just one of a host of worthy community organizations seeking funding. Potential donors questioned the likelihood of our being able to establish and maintain a full-service assisted-living facility, and in spite of a feasibility study back in 2002 that supported that aim, subsequent experience in similar residences elsewhere confirmed the wisdom of those cautious doubts.

The Board of Directors of AVEH persevered through months and even years of hard work, and at times there seemed to be little tangible payoff. But we had made a vow to one another: no one leaves until we have seen the Elder Home safely launched on its next phase.

Fast forward to today, and we have achieved that next phase. You left us with three dwellings all rented to seniors, a positive bank balance, an infrastructure ready to support new dwellings, a community garden in the planning, a newly strengthened alliance with the Senior Center and, equally importantly, a new and expanded Board of Directors that has taken the baton and run with it. Veteran board members Karen Ottoboni, Brian Snelling and I have been joined by Beverley Bennett, Arline Bloom, Jill Hannum, Jerry Karp, and Mark Rivin.

So, again, we want to express enormous gratitude to our emeritus team members, Maureen, Steve, Dave, Aaron and Anne. You led us in developing our vision and action to create a senior living “village” for eligible residents, one that both provides dwellings and promotes needed services through cooperative planning. A community within our community.

And we all want you to know we simply could not have come so far without you. Thank you.
